Searching using words and phrases

For example, type . . .

to retrieve . . .

crim*  (* = wild card)

crime, crimes, criminology, etc.

law enforcement technology

a phrase with all these words, in the order shown

interview/interrogation  (/ = OR)

either word or both

mafia & prostitution  (& = AND)

items containing both words

interrogation ! interviewing

(! = BUT NOT)

interrogation, but not interviewing

community w3 policing

(w = within a user-specified number of words, in any order)

community within 3 words of policing

(e.g.: community based policing, policing an aboriginal community, etc.)

(bomb/explosives) & disposal

(use parentheses to combine words)

both bomb disposal and explosives disposal

Notes:

1.             When using w, as in the above example, do not string together entire phrases.

Example: typing law enforcement w4 police technology  will not retrieve the desired results.

2.             Words joined by the symbols  &  /  and  !  are evaluated in left‑to‑right order.

Example: red & white / blue finds items containing red and white, or items containing only the word blue, but not items containing white and blue without the word red.

Searching by publication year

Use . . .

to retrieve every document published . . .

2006

in the year 2006 (from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2006)

> 2004

after December 31, 2004 (from January 1, 2005 to the present date)

< 1990

before January 1, 1990 (every item published up to December 31, 1989)

1999:2002

between 1999 and 2002 (from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2002)

Using the AND‑OR‑NOT drop‑down list

Use the AND‑OR‑NOT drop‑down menu to the left of each search box to connect terms in one box with terms typed into other boxes.  Boxes are evaluated from top to bottom  -  first box to last.

Case and punctuation

Case is usually ignored (e.g.: a search for content server finds Content Server).

Punctuation is also ignored, except for the AND‑OR‑NOT symbols ( &  /  ! ) and date search symbols ( =  <  > ).  If you do not want these characters to be interpreted as search symbols,

use quotation marks (e.g.: type "Johnson & Johnson") or replace the punctuation with a space

(e.g.: type Johnson Johnson).
